Hearts, tails and blubber at Japan fin whale tasting

On Friday, small samples of fin whale meat were presented for both sniffing and tasting, as Japan’s whaling industry attempts to revive interest in what was once a staple protein source but has significantly declined in popularity. The event took place at Tokyo’s main wholesale fish market, where industry representatives aimed to entice a new generation to rediscover the flavors of whale meat.

Hideki Tokoro, head of Japan’s primary whaling company, expressed optimism about the future of the industry. "Once young people have the chance to try it and realize how good it tastes, they will start eating it more and more," he explained. Tokoro, donning his signature whale-themed hat and jacket, emphasized the enthusiasm surrounding the fin whale meat. "People are excited about it... It's simply delicious," he added, underscoring the event’s focus on showcasing the culinary potential of whale meat to the public.

This effort to rekindle interest in whale consumption comes at a time when the practice of whaling is increasingly scrutinized globally, yet remains a deep-rooted part of Japan’s cultural and culinary traditions. The event served as a strategic move to reinvigorate domestic demand for whale meat, particularly among younger generations unfamiliar with its historical significance.
